China Lifts Ban on Mobile Phone Use on Flights

According to a notice issued by the CAAC on Tuesday, airliners can now make their own rules for passenger use of electronic devices and apply for approval from the CAAC.

Two major airlines in China, China Eastern Airlines and Hainan Airlines, have announced that passengers on their flights can use their mobile phones during flights from Jan 18th.

Currently, many other airlines are evaluating making the change. “Spring Airlines will complete an evaluation as soon as possible, and passengers are expected to be able to use their electronic devices, including mobile phones, in the first half of this year," says Spring Airlines spokesman Zhang Wu'an.

Shenzhen To Be 1st Stop for Grammy Award Winner John Legend

John Legend's Darkness And Light Tour is coming to Shenzhen! China was selected as the first country to hold this Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter's concert and on March 6th, Shenzhen will be the first stop in China of the tour. Expected to last at least 90 minutes, it's said that John Legend will perform at least 20 songs during the concert.



John Legend has earned a famous reputation as a multiple Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter. A child prodigy, Legend's grandmother taught him how to play the piano, and he grew up singing in the church choir. He went on to attend the University of Pennsylvania, where he directed a co-ed a cappella group.

Shenzhen's Ambitious New Plans To Ease Traffic Unveiled

China Merchants Shekou Holdings unveiled plans on Friday to ease the often congested traffic conditions heading into and out of Shekou. The announcement for improving what they refer to as an important part of the transportation network of Hong Kong and Guangdong includes plans to reconstruct the expressway on Wanghai Road and the latest forecasts for completion of the new Metro lines across Shenzhen. Both of which are expected to significantly improve the business environment of the area.

Shenzhen City-Wide Yellow Cold Weather Alert Issued

UPDATE: The cold weather alert was cancelled on Sunday January 14th.

The city-wide orange cold-weather alert issued at 5pm Monday January 8th, was downgraded to yellow at 10am Wednesday January 10th.

The Shenzhen Meteorological Bureau's advisory states that "Cold air will probably affect this area within 24 hours, or is affecting this area where the lowest temperature has fallen to 10°C or below." 

The Shenzhen Meteorological Bureau has issued the following "Guidance for Preparedness"

China Telecom Shenzhen Denies VPN Blocking Claim

Yet another VPN scare has hit expat news recently; this one claiming that telecoms in China will block VPN use by January 11th, 2018. You've probably already seen it. We're not going to do it any justice by reposting it. Since the report does claim; however, that the big Telecom companies will be the ones behind the blocking, we thought we'd jump right to them and ask some questions. We called the China Telecom office here in Shenzhen to confirm the claims.

Shenzhen City-Wide Orange Cold Weather Alert Issued

UPDATE: The alert was downgraded to yellow at 10am Wednesday January 10th.

At 5pm Monday January 8th, the Shenzhen Meteorological Bureau issued their Orange Cold Weather Alert for the entire city of Shenzhen.

Although forecasts predicted lows of no less than 6°C, the Orange Alert; which activates with expectations of 5°C or below, has been hoisted.
