DIY Kirby’s Super Spicy (Vegan) Curry


Hi folks, Drew from PaXaN here. This week we tried our hand at making Kirby’s Super Spicy Curry, but with a vegan twist. This is a relatively easy recipe to make and several different additions or subtractions to the ingredients list can be made to sate the culinary palate of your choosing. Kirby’s Super Spicy Curry has made an appearance in many of the Kirby games, each iteration looking a little different in style but giving the same fire breath style power-up to our hungry hippo hero. The biggest changes we made in our kitchen were to forgo the face melting spice and replace any meat used with some tasty potatoes instead, per the request of newcomer reader and taste tester Angelica.

The basic concept of a Kirby game is to vacuum up enemies and spit them back out at each other. One of the most recent games in the long standing series, Kirby Star Allies, sees our titular hero sucking up enemies to add them to an ever growing list of companions. Sticking to the usual gameplay mechanics as its predecessor’s players will spend the majority of their time traversing through familiar worlds, such as Grasslands and Planet Popstar, and utilizing Kirby’s iconic inhale skills. Although this was the first Kirby game on Nintendo Switch, and was for the most part received well by longtime fans of the franchise, the game was criticized for playing it a bit too safe. Despite the latter half of the game tackling some deep space eldritch horror monsters the majority of this title was rather predictable with all too familiar plot motifs and boss encounters. If you are a fan of this franchise or if you looking for some light hearted side scrolling platform action then Kirby All Stars may well be something to add to your Nintendo collection, however if you want something a little more in depth then we’d suggest to look elsewhere.

Kirby’s Super Spicy (Vegan) Curry
Searching both in game and online gave little in the way of an official ingredients list so we went with tried and true veggie curry staples. We also decided to base the curry sauce off of a Japanese Katsu Curry recipe, seen as Nintendo themselves are a Japanese company.

The list of ingredients we used to make this recipe were:

  • 1x white onion
  • 5x cloves of garlic
  • 1x can of borlotti beans
  • 2x carrots
  • 150g fresh Holland potatoes
  • 2x cubes of vegetable stock
  • 1x tablespoon of vegetable oil
  • 2x tablespoon of flour
  • 1x tablespoon of curry powder
  • 2x tablespoon of honey
  • 1x tablespoon of soy sauce
  • 1x teaspoon of garam masala powder
  • 5x dried chilies (if you wish to keep the recipe super spicy)

How to make the recipe:

  1. Peel & chop your vegetables into sizeable chunks.
  2. Add vegetable oil to a saucepan and fry up your onion and garlic.
  3. After a few minutes add in carrot and potato chunks then place a lid over the saucepan to sweat out the vegetables. Check on the mixture until the vegetables are soft or until the onion has started to caramelize slightly.
  4. In a separate saucepan prepare your vegetable stock.
  5. Add in flour and curry powder gradually, making sure the vegetables are evenly coated.
  6. When the vegetables are thoroughly coated start to add in the vegetable stock, stir continuously.
  7. Strain the borlotti beans and add them into the mixture.
  8. Bring the mixture to a boil and start to simmer down, add in garam masala after a few minutes and stir well.
  9. Continue to simmer down until the sauce has thickened to desired consistency.
  10. (Optional) During the simmering process add your dried chilies to add a spicy kick.

As stated above the ingredients came from our own understanding of Katsu Curry and due to the dietary choices of our taste tester we opted to substitute the meat for potatoes. Curry is always a delight to make and eat, the heartwarming mixture of vegetables gives the dish an earthy feeling and the tanginess of the katsu sauce is a wonderful comparative. It is best to serve this dish with rice, preferably basmati, but you are free to choose whichever side dish you like.
