UPDATE: By 10 a.m. the fire seemed under control. The roads were re-opened and despite the many men in uniform and onlookers on the street it appears as though the worst has past.

Milan GongYue Apartment Fire in Shekou Shenzhen China

We spoke with one apartment resident who was able to make it out. "I woke up just before 7 from the smell. And then I saw the black smoke coming through my front door," tells us one apartment resident. "I made the mistake of opening my front door. In seconds my house was pitch black. I ran to the window and stuck my head out to be able to breathe. That's when I realized I must stay calm and get the f**k out."

"I was able to make it down the stairs, 13 flights in pitch black smoke," he tells us as he recounts his escape. "It seemed like the fire was in the elevator shaft. Because when I got close to the bottom I could see the flames. All along the staircase down I could feel the heat. But couldn't see. Just acted on instinct and kept going."
