What Happened this Month in Shenzhen (July, 2019)

July is usually a slow month in Shenzhen as many expats take off for the summer holiday. Despite this, there was a lot going on, so we thought we'd put together this quick recap highlighting the important, interesting, or just plain fun news of the past month.

Nanshan celebrated the opening of Shenzhen's largest expat center. Actually, the center opened on June 30th; however, media across the province reported on the event on July 1st. It's big news for expats so we thought we'd include it here in case you missed it.
Chinese media reported on the launch of the country's first psychological service network, to be piloted in Shenzhen.
Two Hot New Singers, Rhyzza and Jonathan, join the line-up at Terrace in Shekou; adding a great new dynamic to an already amazing band. Read our interview with them here.
Shenzhen Raised Two Typhoon Warnings and Multiple Weather Alerts in July. The first was on July 1st, and the second typhoon warning on July 31st. In between, we had a pretty rough week of multiple weather warnings and torrential rains. In fact, those rains were worse than the one's accompanying the typhoon warnings. Go figure.
On July 4th, the China Daily reported on new policies that may mean the end of the Beijing Bikini. Sorry ladies.
On July 6th & 7th, Russian Figure Theater producer, Trukitrek Puppet Company, debuted the comedy show 'Hôtel Crab' at the Mountain View Theater.
Shenzhen's immigration authority released numbers showing a record number of entries/exits in the first half of 2019, with over 130 million entry-exit persons in that time, up 7.2 percent year on year.
Professor Simon Choi held a business seminar, hosted by Hardware Massive, on July 12, regarding China's Global Tax, how it affects you, and what you can do to minimize your tax burdens.
Terrace celebrated Bastille Day with champagne and a special performance by TAS on July 13th.
The Management & Service Center for Expats in Shekou (MSCE) held a free summer program for kids from July 15th to the 26th. The Nanshan International Cultural Exchange & Service Center (NSIC) will be holding another free summer program for kids from August 5th to the 16th!
NSIC attracted a big crowd for their course for expats on Chinese Tea Culture Wednesday July 17th. The day earlier, they also held an event helping foreigners learn how to shop on Taobao.
A Shenzhen bus was trapped in massive sinkhole in Shekou on July 17th during rush hour.
Watch as massive lightning bolts struck Shenzhen's Ping'An tower on July 18th.
Martins Licis, the world's second strongest man, was in Shenzhen for a Meet & Greet on July 18th and a seminar on July 19th; both hosted by LiftOn.
F45 Shekou held a party at Baia Friday July 19th, to celebrate the winners of the F45 22nd 8-Week Challenge.
DJ Cedric joined Pirate X Friday July 19th in Xpats Sea World and is now spinning Raggaeton, Latin vibes, pop, hip-hop and more there every Friday from 10pm (and it seems maybe on Saturdays too).
Violin virtuoso, Antje Weithaas, performed at Mountain View Theater on July 20th.
George & Dragon British Pub was packed July 20th as they celebrated their 7 Year Anniversary with adoring fans and their famous Pig-in-the-Box.
Jenz won the free Tattoo by XT Tattoo Studio at the Terrace Tattoo Party and had the beautiful tattoo done on site at the event on July 20th.
Xpats relaunched the 100 rmb all you can eat and drink BBQ on the water Saturday July 20th! They also launch various other activities and food deals this month; including an open mic night, pool tournament, pizza deal, 55rmb wings deal, and a new 68 rmb fish & chips deal.
400 local comics works and 73 precious original drawings from 85 comics artists, recording the changing ages, and profiling cultural memories opened in the Y-COMIC-X? exhibition at the Sea World Culture and Arts Center. Curated by Design Society, the exhibition showcases the story of China through the evolution of Chinese comics. It's appropriate for all ages and is a great place to take photos. Open to the public from July 20th to September 30th.
City Plus offered ¥500 for your feedback on how to improve Shenzhen's eco environment from July 21st to August 2nd.
NSIC screened the popular Hong Kong movie, ROB-B-HOOD, starring Jackie Chan and Louis Koo, at 7pm Thursday (July 25th) during their free movie night. They show popular and famous Chinese movies there, with English subtitles, in case you're interested in joining for future ones.
Huawei announced the release of their new lightning fast 5G phone at a press conference in Shenzhen, and the price is surprisingly affordable.
The State Post Bureau issued the "Administrative Measures for Intelligent Express Mailbox Delivery Service," that will impact your online purchase deliveries, to take effect from October 1st.
Foreigners gathered July 19th to pitch business ideas and learn how they can get support and investment for their businesses and ideas. This was the first event of what is now expected to be a series of events, held at NSIC.
Shenzhen named #1 'Super Smart City' in Deloitte's report of 1,000 smart city projects ready, or under construction, worldwide.
Culture Salad returned to Shekou on July 24th, and now unites people with fun language and cultural exchanges every Wednesday at Terrace in Sea World. The next one there will be on Chinese Valentine's Day where they'll be hosting games for those looking for love. If you're single, you won't want to miss this.
On the morning of July 24th, the Shenzhen Bay Port Pedestrian Footbridge officially opened, connecting it to Shenzhen Bay Park.
Xpats held Trivia Night in Sea World on Tuesday July 30th. It's usually held every Tuesday at its Central Walk location. Trivia Night will be held one more time, on August 6th, in Sea World, before returning to Central Walk. Come and join! It's free to enter, there are great prizes, and great food & drink deals!
NSIC offered a free guided tour of the new Louvre-Like Steel Structures Museum last Wednesday July 31st. The museum is now open to the public as well and admission is free.
